From the Van Alstyne Police Department
The Van Alstyne Police Department would like to remind everyone that the first day of school is Wednesday, August 13, and that means increased traffic, school zones back in effect, and more pedestrians—especially children—on and around our roadways.
To help keep our community safe, we encourage parents, students, and drivers to review these important back-to-school safety tips:
🚗 For Drivers:
Slow Down in School Zones: Watch for reduced speed limits during school zone hours and obey crossing guards.
No Phones While Driving: Texas law prohibits cell phone use in active school zones unless hands-free.
Be Alert: Expect children to dart out unexpectedly—especially near buses, drop-off areas, and crosswalks.
Watch for Buses: Always stop when school bus lights are flashing red—never pass a stopped school bus loading or unloading children.
🚶♀️ For Students Walking or Biking:
Use Crosswalks: Cross only at designated crosswalks and follow signals and crossing guard directions.
Be Visible: Wear bright clothing or backpacks and avoid distractions like texting or earbuds while crossing streets.
Bike Smart: Wear a helmet, ride on the right side of the road, and follow all traffic signals and signs.
👨👩👧 For Parents:
Talk Safety: Remind children about pedestrian safety, stranger awareness, and bus rules.
Plan Ahead: If driving your child, plan extra time for drop-off and pick-up delays.
Know the Rules: Review school-specific drop-off/pick-up procedures to help keep traffic flowing and children safe.
Let’s work together to ensure a safe and smooth start to the school year. Officers will be out monitoring school zones and assisting with traffic the first few weeks to help everyone adjust.
We wish all students, parents, teachers, and staff a great and successful school year!
